Body · Your Lengths

Every gem has its own proportions

When a jeweller describes an oval or an emerald cut, they talk about its ratio: how its length relates to its width. A longer ratio isn't better than a shorter one. It's simply the character of that stone, and a good setting is made to suit it.

Your body works the same way. Your height, the length of your legs and where your waist sits make up your own vertical ratio. Nothing about it needs correcting. It just helps to know where clothes land on you, so you can choose lengths that work with your natural lines.

Find your landmarks

Stand in front of a mirror and look for your narrow points:

  • just below the knee
  • the slimmest part of your lower leg, above the ankle bone
  • your natural waist
  • the narrow part of your forearm

These are your landmarks. They move with you, so they're true whatever your height, and they're the reference point for every length chip in your Passport.

Land on a narrow point

Hems love a narrow point.

A skirt, sleeve or trouser hem that finishes at one of your narrow landmarks follows your natural shape and feels effortlessly balanced.

When a length finishes across a wider point instead, like the middle of the calf or the fullest part of the hip, it isn't wrong. It's a style choice that simply draws the eye there. Knowing the difference lets you choose on purpose.

Why "midi" isn't the same on everyone

Clothing labels are cut for one average height, so the same garment lands in a different place on each of us. As a general guide:

Where standard lengths tend to land by height range
Your heightA standard "knee-length" tends to landA standard "midi" tends to land
Under 160 cmBelow the kneeLower calf to ankle
160–172 cmAt the kneeMid-calf
Over 172 cmAbove the kneeBelow the knee

That's why your Passport describes lengths by where they land on your body, not by what the label calls them.

See where lengths land on you

On any Body category page, choose your height range in the bar under the page heading. Every length chip on your style cards then shows where that piece will land on you, and some cards add a short tip for your height. You only choose once, you can change it any time, and you can always skip it.

Your height never changes which styles are recommended for your cut. It simply tells you where they'll finish.

Your cut, your lengths

Your gem cut shapes the silhouettes that celebrate you. Your landmarks tell you where to finish them. Together they make it easy to create a style that suits you and fits the way you live.
